Historically, drivers using their vehicles for ridesharing services such as UberX risked not having their personal auto insurance cover incidents that happened while they were driving for the service. The only option was a commercial auto policy, the cost of which was preventative to drivers not engaging in ridesharing as a full-time job.

Aviva Canada has changed all that with the launch of its new ridesharing uber insurance coverage, that is now available everywhere in Ontario. While other insurers are talking about launching similar programs, Aviva Canada is the first to market with ridesharing insurance – a welcome relief to Uber drivers concerned about their insurance coverage.

Qualifications are Minimal for Coverage

To qualify for the policy, drivers have to be licensed for over six years. They cannot use their vehicle for ridesharing services for more than 20 hours per week. This number refers to total time the vehicle is used for Ontario rideshare services. If you drive for both Uber and Lyft, your combined time spent on both services can’t be over 20 hours.

The rideshare coverage is available as an addition to an existing Aviva personal auto insurance policy. If you are insured with another insurance company you are not out of luck – you can switch your policy to Aviva at anytime.

It’s also important to note that the coverage only extends to drivers who are contracted by ridesharing services such as Uber or Lyft; if you are offering paid rides through Kijiji, for example, that activity would not be covered. Furthermore, any other commercial operation of the vehicle is prohibited such as delivery or traditional taxi services.

Drivers Over 20 Hours Per Week

The only major limitation on drivers which is immovable is the requirement to stay at under 20 hours per week of operation of the vehicle for ridesharing services. While Aviva is currently considering a commercial policy for drivers who are over this limit, it is not yet available. This means that you may have to budget your time spent driving for the ridesharing service around peak use periods, such as holidays.

Rates are simple and straightforward – one rate for drivers who contract for ridesharing services up to 10 hours a week, and one for those who use the vehicle for ridesharing up to 20 hours per week.
